Sun Dog Book Giveaway

I'm blogging over at Prairie Chicks Write Romance today about going for the big scenes with huge emotional content. And yes, I'm talking about Emma's story again because that's the project I'm working on.

I haven't seen the sun since Tues and if the weather forecast is right, I won't see it until this coming Tues. It was drizzling in the city and surrounding areas yesterday which shows how warm it is and today it's foggy.

But I took these photos at 11 am about 2 hrs before the sun disappeared on Tues. I really like the last one but it's so bare. I'm trying to figure out which one is more pleasing to the eye. If you have a minute, can you post a comment as to which one you like best?

It kinda looks like a big ole' eye ball, doesn't it? LOL

And just to make it interesting, everyone who leaves a comment until Jan 31st will be entered to win a copy of Midnight Marriage by Victoria Bylin. It's a Harlequin Historical so it's not an inspirational book although Vicky is writing for Steeple Hill's Love Inspired Historical line now. Vicky is one of my favourite authors and I've ended up with 2 of these books. Both have been read but this is the better copy in very good condition.

And if I don't know you, please leave your email address with (at) and [dot] so the net spammers can't find it.

For those of you seeing this on my Facebook page, if you want to enter there, rattle my chain somehow because I keep forgetting about it and I wouldn't want to miss your entry.

Have a great day!

  1. I love Sun Dogs - we used to get some amazing displays up in the arctic, you know, when the sun was actually up!

I like the composition of the first one - the sun peeking through the tree and the half dog over the prairie. Very nice - more haunting and unique than the other two. My opinion only ;)

  2. Surprisingly, we're blessed with sun today, here in Alaska, although it's hovering close to 0F. Thanks for the chance to win!

  3. Hey this is so neat...

Janet - you used to live above the Arctic Circle

Denny - who lives up there now

Me - in Southern Sask with the actual photos. (And I spent 10 days above the Arctic Circle back in the 70's) :)

Let's all sing... It's a small world, after all...

Thanks for dropping by Janet and Denny. I've got you both entered.

  4. wow Anita
you are a wonderful photographer. i agree with Janet - the first photo is the one I like best because of the peeking sun. The third photo is interesting with its starkness though.
i learn something new everytime i read your posts. i hadn't heard of sun dogs before.
hoping Emma's story is coming along well.

  6. Hey Deb and Patti - Sun Dogs (also called mock suns) are a phenomena we see several times a winter. They are caused by ice crystals and are usually in very cold weather. On Tues, it wasn't that cold with the temp at -9C/16F but it was horrendously windy. My eyes teared up as soon as I passed the shelterbelt defining our yard. Also, we've been blessed with the beauty of ice crystals and frosted trees for the past week or two.

Thanks for the visit. I've got you both entered. :)

  7. On the prairies, you grow up knowing about sun dogs. We used to say they were an indication of a change in the weather, or an approaching storm. (Could be true this week!)

The 'eyeball' photo is kind of fascinating, but my favourite is also the first one. The emphasis is on the sun dog, rather than the sun. And I like the composition with the tree more fully in the picture. Great photography, Anita.

  8. Beautiful photos! I've never seen a sundog in real life. I like the second one. The tree grounds it and I like the way the rainbow color peeks through the branches.

  9. I like the first one best, too, where the sun (and sun dog) is peeking through the tree!

  10. Cool Anita, I learned something new today! I've never heard of a sun dog, nor do I think I've seen one. Although now I'll keep my eyes peeled on those frigid Colorado days. Thanks for sharing!

  13. Helena - yes, I'm drawn to that eyeball photo, too. Standing out there on the prairie and staring at it seemed like it was looking at me. LOL

Oh Carla - love your wording!

JV and Tammy - that #1 seems to be the fav so far.

Hey Nancy - nice to see you here - you got an eye for the eye, eh? :)

Niki - you should be getting the sun dogs there, too. I'll try to tweet the next time I see one.

Thank you ladies, for your nice words. How did I ever get along before digital cameras? LOL
I've got you all entered for Vicki's book.

  14. Hi Anita
I love sundogs and look for them every year. I once saw one with more than two and the next few days left us with gorgeous hoar frost on everything.
    I like #1 but #3 is unique!
Keep your camera to the handy You take good pictures to say the least.

  15. Thanks Connie, I appreciate you saying it.

Yes, #3 is unique... even compared to the stark 'Arctic' photo of the next blog. I think because the sun is so 'pure' and contained. Does that make sense?

    Anyway, thanks for entering.
